- Here's a great story about graduating senior Wonwoong Kim in Lacey Knowles's Lab. Wonwoong is joining our PhD program this fall.
- Matheus Januario Lopes de Sousa (PhD '26) from Dan Rabosky's Lab won the Thomas Henry Huxley Award from the Society for the study of Evolution for his work leading the development of the educational resource evolved: an open-source R package designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate instruction in evolutionary biology. The T. H. Huxley award, named in honor of Darwin's very public supporter T.H. Huxley, recognizes and promotes the development of high quality evolution education resources.
- Shuting Ding (visiting postdoctoral fellow), postdoc Anjali Mahilkar, postdoc Yang Li, and George Zhang have a new paper in Science Advances showing that the per-generation mutation rate decreases with organismal fitness, indicating that fitness shapes not only selection but also the mutations upon which selection acts.
- PhD student Sean Richards (BS '24), former postdoc Maximilian Hesselbarth, and Jake Allgeier have a new paper in Journal of Animal Ecology in which they explore how two dimensions of biodiversity (species physiology and foraging behavior) interacted with increasing temperature to modulate nutrient supply and ecosystem primary production. The paper is part of a Special Feature in the journal on the mechanisms underpinning zoogeochemistry.
- Finally, Manar Talab (MS '26) was named an Honored Instructor for the 2025-26 academic year for her work in Biology 101. Manar was nominated because "she is a really great instructor! She explained things clearly and was always willing to stay after class to help, especially when people were concerned about the upcoming test. She made an effort to listen to everyone's questions and concerns and made sure people felt heard no matter their opinion, which made the class feel a lot more comfortable and supportive."
- Five of our students - and the Museum of Zoology - are currently featured on the stadium marquee outside the football stadium and Crisler Arena. The group includes Josie Anderson, Ava Freimark, Cheyenne Graham, Samantha Henry, and Evelyn Tanaka in the mammal collection. Approximately 25,000 cars pass by each day, and the display will run for three weeks, including this weekend when tens of thousands of people pour into the stadium for commencement. Thanks to Theresa Frasca for making it happen!
