About
Hitomi Tonomura is the Director of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies, the Faculty Director of the Center for Japanese Studies Publications Program, and is also a Professor of History and Women's and Gender Studies. Her areas of study include premodern Japanese history, East Asian history, gender and sexuality, and premodern war and violence. She is currently examining the relationship between war, violence and gender, especially the making of the samurai-style masculinity and the gendered meaning of Japan's warring age (15-16th century). She is also interested in women's views of childbirth practices and women's diaries in premodern Japan.
