Boren Scholarship for International Study

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren scholarship provides a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to learn languages abroad in world regions critical to U.S. security interests.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships provide tuition and stipends to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. The U.S. Department of Education (US/ED) and U-M units fund these awards under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are three-to-four week programs for U.S. undergraduate students. Participants can explore the culture, heritage, and history of the United Kingdom while experiencing higher education at a UK university.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.

II Fund for U-M Conferences and Workshops

Graduate students and faculty can apply for support for research-related conferences, symposia, and workshops in area and international studies. Undergraduate student groups must have a faculty sponsor who will apply on their behalf.

II Student Fellowships (IISF)

The International Institute Student Fellowships are designed to support University of Michigan students, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled in a degree program and wish to participate in internships or conduct research abroad. Certain awards may allow for virtual projects in 2022, see page for details.

Luce Scholars Program

The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia each year.

US/ED Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships

The U.S. Department of Education (US/ED) Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships provide opportunities for PhD candidates to engage in 6-12 months of full-time dissertation research abroad in non-Western-European area studies and less commonly taught modern foreign languages.

Rackham International Research Award (RIRA)

The Rackham International Research Awards (RIRA) supports terminal master's and doctoral candidates conducting degree-related research outside the United States and Puerto Rico. Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program

The U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Fellowships provide opportunities for regular instructional faculty to improve their foreign language skills and area studies knowledge by conducting 3-12 months of research focused on non-Western European world region. Institutional grant application is coordinated by the International Institute; individual faculty must apply through the International Institute.
