About
Ji Yeon (Jean) Hong is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Studies. Her research centers on the political economy of authoritarianism, with a regional focus on East Asia. She is particularly interested in the institutional legacies of colonialism and authoritarian rule. Her current book project investigates the formation and long-term impact of colonial bureaucracies under the Japanese Empire during the 20th century. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, she served as Assistant Professor (2014–2020) and Associate Professor (2020–2022) in the Division of Social Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
