12:00 AM
Hatcher Library (Gallery #100), 913 S. University

A Reading and Discussion with Translators Stanley Lombardo and Sarah Ruden

Stanley Lombardo will read from his translation of Homer's Iliad (Hackett 2007), and Sarah Ruden will read from her translation of Vergil's Aeneid (Yale 2008). They will reflect further on the process of translating these epic poems from ancient Greek and Latin into English for modern readers. The panel discussion is coordinated by Contexts for Classics at the University of Michigan, and will be moderated by UM Professor Yopie Prins.

Stanley Lombardo is Professor of Classics at Kansas University and well known for translating ancient Greek poetry, including Homer's Iliad (performed at Lincoln Center in 1999) and Odyssey (New York TImes Book of the Year in 2000).  He has recorded his Homer translations in audiobooks and given dramatic readings at venues such as the Smithsonian, Chicago Poetry Center, C-Span, and NPR.  He has also published various translations from Plato, Hesiod, Callimachus, Sappho, Virgil, Dante, and Ovid.

Sarah Ruden is a poet, translator, essayist, and the first woman to publish a complete translation of Virgil's Aeneid into English. She has also received wide acclaim for translating Petronius, Aristophanes, The Homeric Hymns and (most recently) The Golden Ass of Apuleius.

This panel is coordinated by CONTEXTS FOR CLASSICS at the University of Michigan. The AUTHOR'S FORUM is a collaboration between the U-M Institute for the Humanities, University Library, Great lakes Literary Arts Center, & Ann Arbor Book Festival.

This event is free and open to the public.
