Minor in Translation Studies

In an age of growing global interconnection, knowing how to translate requires more than just language skills. Successful translation is the very condition of possibility when it comes to addressing global, national, and regional challenges. The Department of Comparative Literature is involved in a wide range of translation initiatives at the University of Michigan. We collaborate with departments and programs across campus to promote new work in translation studies, integrating various theories and practices of translation.

The Minor in Translation Studies prepares students to enter into this world and engage with the many possibilities it offers. The Minor gives undergraduates at the University of Michigan an opportunity to explore translation from multiple perspectives, as a movement between languages, media, disciplines, and cultures. While the Minor is not intended to certify students as professional translators or interpreters, it may prepare students to pursue certification or other professional credentials in translation after graduation.

Students who choose the minor come from a wide range of departments. They learn about diverse histories, theories, and practices of translation, through a flexible sequence of courses selected from various departments. Translation minor students also complete a capstone project that allows them to engage translation in various literary and professional settings, including internships, community outreach, and creative collaborations.

We encourage you to keep in regular touch with our Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), and we invite you to become part of the CompLit community.  Our department organizes a welcome back reception every year in the Fall and a holiday reception in the Winter for all students and faculty in Comparative Literature, as well as a graduation reception in April or early May. We encourage you to meet our graduate students and to attend lectures and other events organized by the department!
