Directed Reading Requests

COMPLIT 698 (Directed Reading in Comparative Literature) is an independent study course offered to students at the graduate level. 

A student planning to enroll in COMPLIT 698 must confer with the faculty member who will supervise the Directed Reading and then must submit, no later than four weeks prior to the start of the term of the directed reading, a Graduate Student Directed Reading Request that outlines reading and writing assignments and expectations for regular meetings. The proposal is routed to the supervising  faculty member to verify approval and then to the Comparative Literature Student Services Coordinator, who will procure DGS approval (from the student’s home unit), create a section number and registration permission.

In the proposal, students are expected to provide the following information: 

• Write a description of at least one paragraph outlining your goals for the directed reading and explain how it will fit into your program of study
• a description of at least one paragraph outlining your goals for the directed reading and explain how it will fit into your program of study,
• the reading and writing assignments,
• the expectations for regular meetings

Note: A 3-credit Directed Reading should involve at least one hour of student-faculty contact plus an additional 8 hours of work per week. It is also possible to elect 1 or 2 credit hours with an appropriate change in your workload.
