Grants and Scholarships for Undergraduates

This list of funding opportunities is organized by type of award and encompasses a variety of sources both internal (Classical Studies Department, LSA) and external to U-M. Only those awards for which a student can apply directly without faculty nomination are listed here. Information about funding amounts and deadlines can be found at the websites given below. Additional scholarships (ones that encompass a wider group than Classical Studies students) can be found through U-M’s Office of Financial Aid.

For undergraduate study at U-M

Otto Graf Scholarship & Jack Meiland Scholarships

• Source: Internal – LSA Honors Program
• Eligibility: U-M Honors juniors (or second-year students planning to graduate the following year) with serious commitment to their intellectual pursuits and promise for continued academic success

For study abroad

U-M College of LSA International Travel Policy

All U-M students traveling abroad for university-related purposes (i.e., participating in study, research, or internship programs organized or supported by LSA departments/units or for which LSA in-residence credit is granted) are bound by the College of LSA International Travel Policy. 

To receive funding/credit for their international experiences, students are required to:

• Register their travel in the MCompass Travel Registry
• Purchase U-M’s Travel Abroad Health Insurance and upload card to MCompass
• Provide contact information in case of emergency on MCompass
• Submit a safety plan if traveling to a U-M Travel Warning/Restriction destination. (Safety plans must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to departure and MUST be approved before funding can be released)

Carrie Arbour Scholarship 

• Source: Internal – UM Department of Classical Studies
• Eligibility: The Carrie Arbour Scholarship assists "worthy and needy students" in Classical Studies. Undergraduate students in all departmental majors are eligible. 
• Information: The Carrie Arbour Scholarship serves primarily to help students who could not otherwise afford study abroad, both in the summer and during the academic year. The Scholarship will, for example, assist students who are working on excavations, attending summer schools, or participating in programs such as the Intercollegiate Center in Rome. It may also be used for other summer programs. Recipients of the Scholarship are required to write a brief report about their experience for the department's website and/or newsletter

SCS Minority Student Scholarship

• Source: External – American Philological Association
• Eligibility: Minority students pursuing summer study to prepare for graduate work in Classics or Classical archaeology

Eta Sigma Phi Summer Scholarships for the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens

• Source: External – Eta Sigma Phi
• Eligibility: Eta Sigma Phi members who have received a Bachelor’s degree within the eight years prior to application or shall have received it by June 1st of the year in which the application is due (typically in February)

Eta Sigma Phi Summer Scholarship for the Vergilian Society at Cumae

• Source: External – Eta Sigma Phi
• Eligibility: Eta Sigma Phi members who are rising juniors and seniors

Eta Sigma Phi Summer Scholarship for fieldwork in Classical archaeology

• Source: External – Eta Sigma Phi
• Eligibility: Eta Sigma Phi members, with preference given to those who have not yet had experience in archaeological fieldwork

For teacher training at the secondary level

Eta Sigma Phi Bernice L. Fox Latin Teacher Training Scholarship

• Source: External – Eta Sigma Phi
• Eligibility: Eta Sigma Phi members who are now teaching, or preparing to teach, at the pre-collegiate level, and have received a bachelor’s degree within the last ten years or who expect to receive it before the summer of the year in which the application is due (typically in February)

For graduate study

Beinecke Scholarship

• Source: External – The Sperry Fund
• Eligibility: U-M Honors students. Requires endorsement by U-M, for which a student can submit an application

Josephine De Karman Fellowship

• Source: External – Josephine De Karman Fellowship Trust
• Eligibility: Juniors in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university. (Potential applicants should note that the competition for Karman fellowships is extreme. For the 2008-2009 cycle, the committee reviewed 617 applications and awarded 12 fellowships)

In recognition of academic achievement

Virginia L. Voss Memorial Award

• Source: Internal – LSA Honors Program
• The Virginia L. Voss Memorial Awards for excellence in writing by senior Honors women were established in memory of the late Ms. Voss, an Honors graduate in the 1950s and college editor at Mademoiselle Magazine. These awards are given to graduating Honors women who display writing talent in one (or more) of the four categories listed below. Award amounts vary (~$1,000), and there is no set number of prizes. The four prize categories are: (1) academic writing, (2) journalism, (3) poetry, (4) creative prose.
• Students are encouraged to self-nominate. If a student self-nominates, she may submit a thesis alone, or request a letter of endorsement from a departmental representative.
