Professor Christopher Ratté launches fund-raising initiative for research at Notion with new matching grant
Research at Notion has been generously supported by the Department of Classical Studies and other institutional sponsors, including the NEH. With the conclusion of the NEH funding, Professor Ratté has begun an effort to recruit additional supporters through the "Friends of Notion."
The department has been sponsoring archaeological work at the ancient Greek city of Notion in western Türkiye since 2014. From 2014 to 2018, an archaeological team from the University of Michigan and partner institutions carried out an archaeological survey of the site, documenting its extensive fortifications, grid-planned street system, and major civic and religious buildings. Excavations commenced in 2022, and the richness of the site was dramatically confirmed by the discovery of a hoard of Persian gold coins in the second season of work. Research at Notion has been generously supported by the Kelsey Museum and various other institutional donors, including the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). We have now completed the NEH-funded portion of our project, and to continue our work, we are looking for additional sources of support. To find out more about the project and join our donor group, please see https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/notionproject/. The project has received a $35,000 matching grant for the 2025 season from the Merops Foundation, and our goal is to raise the funds to match that pledge.
