Thursday, February 13, 2025
6:00-7:30 PM
Helmut Stern Auditorium Museum of Art Map
During excavations at Karanis, Egypt, the University of Michigan employed the relatively new medium of motion pictures to document its project. Several hours of film footage show scenes of daily village life, the surrounding landscape, and of course, Michigan archaeologists and Egyptian laborers at work at Karanis.

Join us at the U-M Museum of Art’s Helmut Stern Auditorium (525 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109) to watch some of the silent film footage from the 1920s excavations, followed by a panel discussion providing insight into this bygone movie medium. The speakers will also discuss excavation practices from this era as compared to the community-centered field projects in which the Kelsey Museum engages today.

This event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167.
