Freedom Dreaming in Chemistry: Using Afrofuturism to Re-Envision STEM

In 2002, Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley wrote “Freedom Dreams,” where he began his book asking two questions: “How do we produce a vision that enables us to see beyond our immediate ordeals?” and, “How do we transcend bitterness and cynicism and embrace love, hope, and an all-encompassing dream of freedom, especially during these rough times?” Being in dialogue with Dr. Kelley, this presentation “freedom dreams in Chemistry” by exploring the possibilities and outcomes of using Afrofuturism as a framework to anchor STEM research, teaching, learning, and engagement. Implications for conspirators and co-conspirators in the freedom-dreaming movement are discussed.
