Christopher J. Miller earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Maine and completed postdoctoral training in astrophysics at Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining the University of Michigan faculty in 2010, he served as the scientific lead for Science Data Management at the National Optical Astronomical Observatory (now NOIRLab), the nation’s premier facility for professional astronomy. Dr. Miller is an internationally recognized expert in observational cosmology, specializing in galaxy clusters and large-scale cosmic structures, with research spanning fundamental tests of gravity. He is known for pioneering work on baryon acoustic oscillations and the integration of AI and machine learning into astrophysics. Dr. Miller has held major leadership roles in international collaborations including the Dark Energy Survey, LSST, and the E-ELT MOSAIC project, and has been honored with numerous awards for both research and teaching. A dedicated mentor and educator, he has guided many students and contributed extensively to curriculum development, departmental leadership, and university service.
