Students who have encountered serious academic difficulties may face academic recess from the college. Students on academic recess must take one calendar year away from the university in order to address any challenges they may be facing. Recess is not designed as punishment, but rather as a time where students can more fully address the life circumstances that have impacted their grades.

What is the Purpose of Academic Recess

Academic recess is designed to protect a student’s grade point average from falling further, and to provide time and space for students to lay a stronger foundation for academic success so that ultimately they are able to complete their LSA degrees.

What are the Differences Between Academic Progress Notice and Academic Recess?

Students who are recessed may not take courses at the university, while those on an academic progress notice can continue their studies in LSA.

I’ve Been Recessed. What Steps Do I Need to Take to Return to UM?

Students who are recessed must take a full calendar year away from the university. We encourage you to meet with a student success advisor in your advising unit to discuss options during your time off and how to return to the university.

How Should I Prepare for My Meeting with a Student Success Advisor?

Take time to reflect on your previous semester, academic goals, and the areas where you have encountered academic difficulties. What patterns do you notice, and what steps do you need to take to support long-term academic success?

Students are welcome to meet with a Student Success advisor at any point during their suspension status, and are required to do so prior to submitting a readmission petition. Advisors are not here to judge your past grades, but rather to help you think through a plan, explain relevant policies, and offer perspective.
