Licensed Professional Counselor and Limited Licensed Psychologist at Identity Ann Arbor
About
Why did you choose to major in Psychology and how has that affected your career thus far?
I chose psychology because I wanted to have a direct impact on people. I wasn’t sure at first how that would happen, however, I’ve found this type of role as a private practice therapist. Psychology plays a unique role as a sort of bridge between philosophy and the more traditional sciences (such as biology, chemistry, and physics). Majoring in psychology has allowed me to become licensed through the state to practice as a counselor and limited licensed psychologist. Studying psychology has in many ways fundamentally reshaped my worldview as well as my career outlook.
What was your career path like?
I started out my career as a mechanical engineer. While I enjoy working as an engineer, I have found that my deeper passions lie in helping people grow into who they truly desire to be. I just began working on my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and desire to someday become a fully licensed psychologist and possibly become a faculty member.
What advice do you have both professionally and personally for students and recent alumni who are interested in pursuing a career similar to yours?
A career as a therapist requires not only that you help your clients grow in ways which they desire to expand, but also requires that you do your own inner work. This field is as much about growing as a person as it is about contributing to the growth of others. Though evidence-based practices and treatments are important in treatment, it is the therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist that facilitates the greatest capacity for change to occur. Throughout the process of providing therapy to a client, you will undoubtedly go through a journey all your own. It is embarking on this journey that will continue to make you a better therapist.
What is the best career advice that you have received?
The best advice that I have received has been to genuinely pursue my passions. Anything you choose to do can earn you a living if you do it well enough. Too many people find themselves deep into a career, feeling stuck, only to then realize that it has never satisfied them. Use every available opportunity to try new things. It may help you realize what you truly desire and what is just an illusion.
What has contributed most to your career success?
I had a supervisor in my graduate program, Dr. Larry Beer at Child and Family Psychological Services. Dr. Beer taught me that in the end, relationships are the most important component in therapy and in life. My experience at Dr. Beer’s practice also taught me some of the ins and outs of running a private practice.
Why do you love Psychology?
I love psychology because it gives us a platform to discuss the human condition in terms of cognition, neuroscience, biology, philosophy, and evolution. Being able to contribute to the field of psychology and to the growth of people has given me a sense of fulfillment in my work in the world.
