Prelims (See more on HAPPI)
The preliminary exams (“prelims”) are designed to ensure that students have acquired the necessary background for teaching and scholarship in history and women’s studies. Field requirements for the preliminary examinations therefore encourage a combination of breadth and depth. The preliminary exam has both written and oral components. Like other History students, joint students complete a written exam in their major field. The oral exam covers this field and two other fields described below.
- A major field which is geographical/temporal/topical
- Gender/Women’s/Sexuality History: Focus on gender, women’s, or sexuality history.
- A comparative field distinctly different from the major field geographically, temporally or disciplinarily
- Note: If the Gender/Women’s /Sexuality field is comparative, then the third field does not have to be, but it cannot overlap with or simply be a subset of either the major or the GWS field
Note: Women’s and Gender Studies students “course off” the cognate field with WGS 530 and 601.
Committee Composition
Definition of a Prelim Field
Schedule your preliminary examination using the following guidelines:
Preliminary Exam Check-In:
The Preliminary Exam PDF form helps you organize your prelims by:
- Identifying your prelims committee members.
- Defining the subject matter of each exam field.
- Recording your anticipated prelim date.
- Ensuring there are no issues with your committee’s composition or other requirements.
Consultation:
Students and their advisors should consult early with the History Associate Chair of Graduate Studies (ACGS) and the WGS/History liaison (DPC member) to clarify any uncertainties about fields, committee members, or exam dates.
Submission Timeline:
You must submit the Preliminary Exam Check-In InfoReady form by December 15th of your third year
Changes After Approval:
Any changes to your fields or examiners after approval require a new form. This form must be signed by the prelims chair and submitted to the History graduate office for final approval by the History ACGS.
Scheduling Request Form
After holding the “Check-In” meeting with your prelim committee by December 15th of your third year, determine when your prelims will take place.
Steps to Follow:
- Agree on a Date: After you and your committee agree on a date and time for your prelim exam, submit the Scheduling Request Form to the History graduate office by March 15th.
- Approval: All prelim committee members must confirm in writing that you’re ready for the exam. The committee chair will then notify the History ACGS if the exam can proceed as scheduled.
- If Not Ready: If it’s determined that you’re not ready, a new exam date (within the deadline guidelines) will be set, and the History ACGS must be informed.
- Conducting the Check-In: The check-in meeting can be held in any manner that works for you and your committee. Once you have all the necessary signatures, the staff will reserve a room and send a confirmation notice to your committee.
