Starting in 1995, the joint doctoral in Psychology and Women’s & Gender Studies began training students and established itself as the model for interdisciplinary scholarship. The founding of the Psychology/WGS joint program signaled – and continues to lead – in the growth of the field of feminist psychology. The Gender and Feminist Psychology (GFP) area is the name of the area in the Psychology department that houses the Joint Ph.D. program.
Graduate students in the program have curriculum expectations in two departments, and are trained by faculty with appointments in both Psychology and WGS. Psychology is divided into different areas; for more information about the program areas, visit the Department of Psychology.
When applying to the Joint Program in Psych/WGS, students will need to decide which area of Psychology they wish to join. The two choices are: the Personality & Social Contexts (PSC) area OR the Developmental Psychology area. In their applications, students should identify which of the areas they are applying to work in, in addition to noting the faculty they are applying to work with. Faculty and their areas are listed here. Please note that the area you apply to should align with the faculty affiliations (i.e., PSC faculty cannot advise Developmental students).
