The prospectus is a proposal or plan for your dissertation research and writing. A copy of the prospectus should be filed with the Women’s and Gender Studies Graduate Office.
In History, the prospectus is typically 4,000-7,00 words or 15 to 25 pages double-spaced and outlines the subject, central question, and methodological approach to the dissertation. It also discusses the significance of the work in advancing the understanding of the discipline, relates it to existing literature, and includes a bibliography. A chapter plan and/or tentative timetable may also be included. The prospectus is distributed to the dissertation committee and used as a basis for discussion during a scheduled prospectus presentation, which must be completed by the end of the first term after attaining candidacy.
Students will receive a Prospectus Presentation Scheduling Request Form at the time they are advanced to candidacy. This form should be completed and returned to the graduate office when a date and time have been scheduled for the presentation.
