Sweetland Peer Writing Program

The Sweetland Peer Writing Program provides undergraduate students from across the University with an opportunity to assist fellow U-M undergrads with their writing. Sweetland-trained peer writing consultants offer traditional face-to-face consulting at our main Peer Writing Center (Shapiro Undergraduate Library 2160) and satellite offices, as well as online consulting.

There are two ways to enter the Peer Writing Consultant program:

1. Receive a nomination to apply

You may be nominated to apply by a university faculty or staff member, an employer, or a recent high school teacher (not related to you). Each fall term, Sweetland invites faculty and staff across campus to nominate students for the program. When you are nominated, you will receive an email from Sweetland, inviting you to apply to the Peer Writing Program. The application includes writing short essay responses and submitting an academic writing sample from a University of Michigan course.

2. Apply directly by self-nomination

We also heartily welcome anyone interested to self-nominate by directly applying once the application opens each October. If you’re self-nominating, the application will prompt you to enter a required reference who is an employer, a recent high school teacher (not related to you), or a university faculty or staff member--someone who is familiar with your interpersonal skills, dependability, values, and approach to learning and growth. If they’re familiar with your writing skills too, that’s a bonus.

Sweetland Minor in Writing

The Sweetland Minor in Writing is designed for undergraduate students who are interested in developing their disciplinary and professional writing abilities while pursuing their majors. It gives you the freedom to write about what matters to you while helping you develop as a writer and thinker. 

Students currently in the Minor program come from all over the university bringing a wealth of diverse interests to the classroom. You might find a screenwriter sitting between a scientist and a musician or Kinesiology, Business, and Communications majors giving each other feedback on their writing.

With a Sweetland Minor in Writing you will earn a credential that certifies your writing expertise to prospective employers and graduate programs. You will also pick up new media skills designing and creating content for your electronic writing portfolios.
