Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences, Professor of Physics, and Professor of Applied Physics
About
Professor Jovanovic is the Director of the Neutron Science Laboratory (NSL) and the Applied Nuclear Science Instrumentation Laboratory (ANSIL), and the leader of the Applied Nuclear Science Group. He is a member of the management team of ZEUS, the most powerful laser in the United States. His expertise is in radiation detection and measurement for scientific discovery, nuclear energy, and nuclear security; intense laser science and technology; and laser-matter interactions. His group has developed novel radiation detectors based on heterogeneous composites, opaque scintillators, segmented scintillators, and two-dimensional materials. In the field of ultrafast optics, he advanced remote detection of nuclear and chemical threats using laser-produced plasmas and advanced the high-power laser technology based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification.
Before arriving at Michigan, Professor Jovanovic was a staff physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and a professor at Purdue University and Penn State University. He is a recipient of the DARPA Young Faculty Award and the DHS Nuclear Forensics Junior Faculty Award, and he is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and a Fellow of Optica.
