Applied Physics | Active and living solids
Suraj Shankar, Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Michigan
From cytoskeletal networks to cells and tissues, numerous biological systems behave as elastically coupled active materials. Yet little is known about the emergent properties of active solids and their implications for biology. I will highlight recent and ongoing work on exploring dynamics, energetics, failure, growth, etc., in active solids and discuss functional consequences for physiology and morphogenesis.
