Professor Manley has published widely in natural language semantics, ontology, and epistemology. He is co-author of The Reference Book, a book about the cognitive phenomenon of singular thought and the semantics of specific noun phrases. 

He now works on philosophical issues connected with rationality and global priorities. He is also a proponent of redesigning the standard philosophical curriculum, and wrote Reason Better as a new kind of critical thinking textbook.
