Rangel Fellowship

Overview and Introduction

The Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the State Department’s Foreign Service Office (FSO), especially members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need.  The fellowship provides generous funding to support two years of graduate study, internships and professional development activities, and entry into the Foreign Service. Fellows commit to working for at leave five years in the FSO upon completion of the fellowship.

National Application Deadline: TBD (Late September)

Eligibility:

  • Degree Level: Senior or alumni 
  • Academics: 3.2 GPA or higher required
  • Citizenship: US citizenship required 

Selection Criteria:

  • Interest in Foreign Service career with the US Department of State
  • Strong academic background and writing skills
  • Leadership skills and commitment to service
  • Cultural sensitivity 
  • Diverse interests in areas such as international affairs and government

  • Endorsement: U-M Nomination is not required

Application Components 

  1. Personal Statement (600 words or less)
  2. Statement about applicant's financial need (400 words or less)
  3. 2 letters of recommendation
  4. Student Aid Report (SAR) from FAFSA
  5. Official Financial Aid Statement from senior year, if applicant received financial aid
  6. GRE or GMAT scores
  7. Transcript(s)
