Overview and Introduction
Please note: The Mitchell Scholarship cycle has been paused for 2024-25. As a result, U-M will be cancelling its campus application process.
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program honors former US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process.
Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one academic year of graduate study in any discipline offered by nine institutions of higher learning in the Republic of Ireland.
The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides university tuition, accommodation/housing, a stipend for living expenses and travel, as well as chances for additional scholarship opportunities at your chosen institution.
Eligibility:
- Age: Between 18 and 30 years of age
- Academics: Minimum GPA of 3.5
- Citizenship: US Citizenship is required
Mitchell Selection Criteria:
- Academic excellence and intellectual distinction
- An outstanding record of leadership
- A sustained commitment to service and community
Application Deadlines
- U-M Deadline: Mitchell has been paused for 2024-25, and as a result U-M will cancel this year's campus nomination process as well.
- National Deadline: Late September
- Endorsement: Only current students applying for the Mitchell program beginning in the following fall are required to apply through U-M. Applicants who have already received their bachelor's degree can apply directly to the Mitchell Scholarship using the online application.

Application Components
- Four letters of recommendation
2-3 references should be academic in nature, 1-2 leadership/service. - Personal Statement. (1000 words)
A unique aspect of the Mitchell is that applicants may only receive strategic feedback from their fellowship advisor/mentor on their personal statement draft. Line-by-line editing is not allowed, and each applicant’s personal statement must represent their own work, voice and experience(s) and address why studying in Ireland and/or Northern Ireland as a Mitchell Scholar makes sense for their future goals. Briefly discussing an applicant’s university and program choices is helpful. - Proposed Academic Program (350 words)
Applicants should list at least three different institutions and may list up to five. Institutional balance is a factor in the placement of Scholars at universities on the island, so an applicant's prospects are enhanced by indicating multiple university preferences. Listing multiple programs at the same institution is not equivalent to listing different institutions and does not bolster an application. - Two-page Resume
