Hello everyone! My name is Aditree, and I’m a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Michigan. As an international student, moving to a new country for college was both exciting and challenging. I had spent most of my life living in Mexico after being born in India, so while I was used to adapting to different cultures, the thought of navigating life in the U.S. was still a bit overwhelming. Adjusting to a new culture, making friends, and finding a sense of belonging seemed daunting at first. However, joining MRADS made the transition much easier, providing me with a supportive community and opportunities to connect with others who share similar experiences. MRADS not only gave me a platform to grow academically and professionally but also helped me form lasting friendships and find a community that truly feels like home.
Meeting Other International Students
One of the best parts of being in MRADS is the opportunity to meet other international students. Coming from different backgrounds, we bond over our unique journeys and help each other navigate life in a new country. We often exchange stories about adjusting to American culture, from understanding academic expectations to learning about local customs. It’s comforting to have friends who understand what it’s like to be far from family and home, and who are always willing to offer advice or just listen. Whether it’s sharing tips about the best grocery stores to find familiar foods or discussing ways to deal with homesickness, the international students’ network in MRADS becomes a strong support system.
The international students’ affinity group has been an incredible resource, giving us a space to share our experiences and support one another. These meetings not only provide a sense of familiarity but also create a sense of belonging that is essential in the early days of college life. Through these connections, I’ve formed bonds that extend beyond MRADS, and I know that the friendships I’ve built will last long after my time here.
Support from Staff and Peers
MRADS Staff and Student Leaders play an essential role in fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment. They are always available to offer guidance—whether it’s about academics, adjusting to campus life, or finding resources to help international students settle in. During my initial weeks at UofM, I had so many questions—about course registration, finding the right clubs, and understanding how things work in the U.S.—and the MRADS Staff were always there to provide the information and support I needed. Their genuine care for each student’s well-being ensures that no one feels lost or left behind.
In addition to the Staff, MRADS student leaders and peers are incredibly supportive and welcoming. Whether it's collaborating on research projects, studying together in the lounge, or simply grabbing a meal after class, the camaraderie within MRADS creates an environment where everyone feels valued. I’ve met some of the most inspiring people here—students who are passionate about making a difference and who encourage each other to succeed. Even in moments of doubt or homesickness, I’ve always found comfort in knowing that I can rely on my peers for advice and encouragement.
A Home Away from Home
For international students, finding a support system is crucial, and MRADS provides just that. Through friendships, engaging events, and a strong community, MRADS ensures that no one feels alone in their journey at U of M. Whether it’s through affinity groups, student-led activities, or daily interactions with peers, being part of MRADS truly makes the university feel like a home away from home.
Even during difficult moments—like adjusting to new academic expectations or dealing with homesickness—I’ve always had a network of friends and mentors in MRADS to lean on. The sense of belonging I’ve found here goes beyond academics and research; it’s about knowing that I have a community that cares about me and understands what I’m going through. Through my time in MRADS, I’ve learned that while being far from home can be challenging, it’s also an opportunity to create a new home, one where I am surrounded by people who inspire and support me every step of the way.
