  1. The Michigan Learning Communities are committed to building communities of engaged and enthusiastic students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. In what ways would you contribute to your Michigan Learning Community and bring a unique perspective or viewpoint? (suggested word count: 150-350 words)
  2. Research is a process of exploration and inquiry driven by curiosity about the world around us. It is a journey to uncover new knowledge, validate existing ideas, and gain fresh insights into various phenomena. At its core, research is accessible to everyone, as it transcends formal / professional experience. It relies on curiosity and the desire to ask questions and seek answers. This means that anyone, even students without prior research experience, can possess the skills necessary to be a researcher. Please address the following three questions to explain your interest in MRADS: suggested word count: [200 words]
    • What motivates you to apply to the Michigan Research and Discovery Scholars program?
    • What ideas or topics are you curious about or interested in researching?
    • How have your life experiences shaped the ideas you’re curious about or interested in researching?

If you apply by the final deadline of May 11, 2026, you will know your status by May 20th at 5 pm EST. Students may only be admitted to one Michigan Learning Community.  Michigan Learning Communities review applications in the order of preference indicated by the student in their application. For more information, please see this FAQ guide.

What are we looking for in your application essays?

  1. A clear articulation of what motivates you to apply
  2. Strong and clear interest in conducting research
  3. An understanding of who you are and how it shapes your research interests
  4. Concrete examples to provide evidence to your claims
