Hey everyone! These are some tips that really helped me make the most of my freshman year. Hope you find them helpful and enjoy your own college journey!

Don’t Overload on Classes Your First Semester

Whether you know your major or not, your first semester is about adjusting to college life. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many tough classes. Keep your course load manageable so you have time to socialize, explore campus, and get involved in clubs. This balance is key to easing into college.

Get Involved on Campus

There’s a club for just about everything at college, from hobbies to professional development. Start by exploring clubs during Festifall and browsing through MaizePages. To avoid feeling overwhelmed by all the options, make a list of clubs that catch your eye and prioritize them. Attend their meetings to see if they’re a good fit, but don’t feel pressured to join every club.

Explore New Places

While it’s easy to stick to convenient spots near campus, take the time to explore new areas downtown. Try different restaurants, visit local shops, and make the most of the city surrounding your campus. Also, familiarize yourself with TheRide buses—they’re free and an easy way to get around.

Say Yes, But Make Time for Yourself

College offers endless opportunities, so say yes to experiences that excite you—but don’t stretch yourself too thin. It’s important to find balance. Spread out your commitments, and remember that alone time is just as essential. Take moments to recharge, relax, or do nothing at all. It’s not a waste; it’s crucial for avoiding burnout and maintaining your well-being throughout your college journey.

Create a Routine

Between socializing and academics, it’s easy to get distracted. Establishing a routine will help you stay on track. Whether it’s a scheduled study session at a local cafe or setting specific days for the gym, creating a routine will help balance both social and academic responsibilities, making them feel like second nature.

Attend Office Hours

In big classes, it’s easy to feel invisible, but professors are often eager to connect with students. Even a simple introduction can go a long way. Building a relationship early on not only makes it easier to ask for help later, but can also lead to opportunities for research, mentorship, or recommendation letters when you need them.

Prioritize Sleep

It is really easy to be sleep-deprived while in college, but getting enough rest is vital. It impacts everything from your mood to your academic performance. Try to stick to a sleep schedule as best as you can. It will make a world of difference in how you feel and function during the day.

Make New Friends & Be Open-Minded

Freshman year is the perfect time to meet new people, and you’re not alone in wanting to make connections. Take the chance to introduce yourself to neighbors and leave your door open during the first few days of moving in. The diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives you’ll encounter is one of the most exciting parts of college. Embrace these differences—they'll challenge your thinking and open you up to new experiences.
