Michigan Research and Discovery Scholars
The Michigan Research and Discovery Scholars (MRADS) offers incoming first-year students a research partnership with a faculty member in an area of their choosing, as well as a small, diverse & supportive community to call home. MRADS is a residential affiliate of the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). MRADS is an introductory research experience - you do not need to have prior research experience to be qualified for this program!
MRADS' Mission & Goals
The mission of MRADS is to recruit, support, and retain students from diverse backgrounds and academic fields; to expose them to the interdisciplinary nature of research and the breadth of its applications; to engage students in building a community based on mutual respect and affirmation of diversity; and to enhance students' undergraduate experience by providing them with academic and professional resources as well as engaging extracurricular opportunities to support their academic and personal growth.
Our scholars develop competencies in:
- Research Engagement: Actively participating in research by exploring new ideas,collaborating with others, and applying research findings to real-worldproblems.
- Multicultural Awareness: Understanding and appreciating different cultures andperspectives, recognizing your own cultural identity and biases, and valuingdiversity in interactions.
- Responsible Stewardship: Ethically managing resources, such as time andmaterials, and making decisions that benefit the community and supportsustainability.
- Academic Achievement: The successful attainment of educational goals,mastery of skills and knowledge, utilizing academic resources, performing wellin coursework.
- Strategic Communication: Planning and sharing information effectively toachieve goals, understanding your audience, and using the right channels toconvey your message.

MRADS Student Benefits
WHO WE ARE
The WISE RP is an academically supportive living-learning community for first-year gender-minoritized students who are interested in academic majors and careers in the sciences, mathematics, engineering and/or pre-health.
We assist in students’ transition to the university by providing social activities, career development programs, community service, and programming opportunities. Each first-year student is paired with a Peer Mentor and is encouraged to participate in the WISE RP facilitated study groups.
- Participate in a faculty-mentored research project in their first year at the University of Michigan. Research areas include the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and biomedical sciences
- Learn about the foundations of research through "ALA 104: Introduction to Research", research seminars throughout the year, and skill-building workshops
- Small group interaction with faculty who conduct research in a variety of disciplines and care about sharing their experience with undergraduates
- Mentorship from student leaders who live in the community and who have completed a faculty-mentored research project
- Social activities, wellness workshops, professional development, and multicultural programs
- Academic support through in-house study groups for all major introductory science and math classes
- Present research the MRADS Spring Research Symposium and potentially National Conference on Undergraduate Research
