In a recent article at The Daily Beast, Kelsey assistant curator and economic historian Irene Soto Marín offers some sound advice to readers who might be thinking that digging for ancient treasure is a good retirement plan. In the article, "Should You Drop Everything and Hunt for Treasure in Europe?," by University of Birmingham professor of theology Candida Moss, Soto Marín warns that the "large majority of coins found in hoards are dinky bronzes that have very little monetary value, but tremendous historical value.” She goes on to summarize some laws governing the discovery of antiquities in various countries. The upshot: “Why put yourself in a precarious legal position over something that is perhaps not that valuable monetarily?”
