Silke-Maria Weineck, professor of German studies and comparative literature, and Stefan Szymanski, Stephen J. Galetti Collegiate Professor of Sport Management, are co-authors of It’s Football, Not Soccer (And Vice Versa): On the History, Emotion, and Ideology Behind One of the Internet's Most Ferocious Debates. The witty monograph, available on paper or Kindle here, examines the use of the word “soccer.”

Szymanski and Weineck outline the four main arguments against the term in a June 8, 2018 Washington Post opinion piece: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/global-opinions/wp/2018/06/08/how-the-world-uses-soccer-to-bash-the-united-states.
