Transfer Credit

Department Transfer Credit Policy

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures allows students to take and transfer courses from other accredited institutions to UM for prerequisite and major credit through the departmental approval process (see details below). Transfer courses may be applied toward your major, but at least 15 of the 30 credits need to be taken through UM courses (including courses taken on UM administered study abroad). Minors must take 10 of the required 18 credits through UM courses (including courses taken on UM administered study abroad). Approval for credit of courses transferred from an institution not affiliated with UM must go through the German Department’s Transfer Credit Evaluation Process. Please contact the German advisors (germanadvising@umich.edu) to initiate the process and be prepared to provide a course description, syllabus, and representative assignments.

Currently Enrolled UM Students and Students on UM Study Abroad

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures approves German courses from accredited two and four-year institutions of higher education.

Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency website (https://transfercredit.ugadmiss.umich.edu/) to see if the class has already been approved for transfer.

Determinations of courses that satisfy the language requirement will be made by the German Transfer Credit subcommittee or the respective Dutch and Swedish program directors. Decisions should be expected within 5 business days. Please email germandept@umich.edu the class that needs to be approved for transfer.

Your German credits may be listed German 101X, German 102X, etc. These credits should not be considered automatically equivalent to German 101, German 102, etc. In order to ensure student success in the UM curriculum, undergraduate advisors place students into the course appropriate for their actual level.

Even if you were to take German 101 or German 102 at Michigan, you will not lose your transfer credits (German 101X, 102X, etc.).

We strongly advise you to complete your LSA foreign language requirement as quickly as possible.

Please note that courses taken through the CGIS programs in Tübingen and Freiburg are not in need of accreditation and automatically satisfy requirements for major/minor (and also 232 in the case of Tübingen).

Prospective Transfer Students

If a class is not listed at all on the TCE, this means that no student has ever submitted it for evaluation.
