In order to critically engage with deeply important issues related to transnationalism—including migration, race and ethnicity, globalization, colonialism, multiculturalism, translation, identity politics, cosmopolitanism, and exile—Professor Kristin Dickinson has been working to form an interdisciplinary research network involving graduate students and faculty from four leading public universities: The University of Michigan, Michigan State University, The University of Massachusetts Amherst, and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The impetus for this network finds its roots in the Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop “Alamanya: Transnational German Studies,” which brings together graduate students and scholars concerned with analyzing cross-cultural encounters between Germany and the world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The ultimate goal is to create an ongoing interdisciplinary workshop that is separate from Alamanya, but that provides a forum for its members to network with faculty and graduate students working on similar issues at other US institutions.

The research network’s inaugural workshop will take place May 5-7, 2017, at the University of Michigan, with the plan to reconvene once every two years. The workshop setting will accommodate approximately 25 participants and diverse presentation formats, including panels, a roundtable, and a discussion of current scholarship in the field.
