German Day 2019
The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures welcomed participants from twenty-one participating schools to its 35th Annual German Day on Friday, March 15, 2019. Department Chair Andreas Gailus awarded the 2019 German Teacher of the Year award to Frankenmuth's Jennifer Fruendt. The keynote speaker was Professor Frederick Amrine, who talked to students about how to incorporate the theme, Wanderlust, into their lives (PDF of speech).
Participants competed in 30 different competitions and were judged by faculty and graduate students in the German department. The entire day was made possible by over one hundred U-M student volunteers. After the competitions were over, prizes donated by this year's sponsors were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners during the awards assembly. Vicki Dischler's German 336 German-in-Song class performed during the assembly, along with several encore performances by German Day participants.
The day was a success and we look forward to doing it again next year!
