6th Annual Open-Book Translation Contest
All undergraduate University of Michigan students enrolled in a German course or registered as a German major or minor in the winter 2018 term were invited to participate in the department’s 6th Annual Open-Book Translation Contest on February 22, 2018.
The contest, which was judged by a panel of three faculty members, was held under the same conditions used by the American Translators Association (ATA) for its certification exam. Students had 70 minutes to translate a text, approximately 225-275 words in length, from German to English. Students did not have access to the internet, but could bring and use as many hardback or paperback dictionaries as they wished. Entries were identified by the student’s university ID number only for anonymous judging.
Monetary prizes of $150 for first place, $125 for second place, and $100 for third place were awarded to: Annabel Lemke (first place), Ted Ma (second place), and Stephanie Misevich (third place).
Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to all participants!
