GERMAN FILM INSTITUTE <br>The Cinema of Crisis: German Film 1928-1936

Directed by Ernö Metzner. Written by Grace Chiang and Ernö Metzner. With Liane Kleine and Max Bandelow.

A short film by Ernö Metzner, Polizeibericht Überfall details the life of a man over the course of a single day. His life gets out of control after he finds a coin on the street. When he tries to buy something with it, it isn’t accepted because it is suspected to be counterfeit. Later he uses it to bet in a dice game, and it seems to bring him lots of luck — so much so that it attracts the attention of two criminals who make plans to rob him. Running away from the men, he takes refuge in a prostitute’s apartment. A charming film that tries to capture the mood of desperation in depression era Germany.
