GERMAN FILM INSTITUTE <br>The Cinema of Crisis: German Film 1928-1936

Directed by Phil Jutzi. Written by Willy Döll and Jan Fethke. With Alexandra Schmitt, Holmes Zimmermann and Ilse Trautschold.

In the middle of an economic crisis, workers are living in poverty and struggling to find a little happiness and get a warm meal. Mother Krause lives with her two grown-up children, as well as a shady “bed lodger” and his lover – a prostitute with a child – on just a few square metres. Suddenly, tensions build, and Mother Krausen’s painstakingly preserved order begins to collapse. Fassbinder remade the film, which he hailed as one of his favorites, in 1975 as Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven.
