GERMAN FILM INSTITUTE <br>The Cinema of Crisis: German Film 1928-1936
Directed by Richard Eichberg. Written by Hans Kyser and Adolf Lantz. With Anna May Wong, Alexander Granach and Nien Soen Ling.Anna May Wong stars as an exotic Parisian fan dancer who flees her show after a serious accident and finds refuge with a bohemian painter. She later becomes a social darling, but as to be expected, her past catches up with her in the form of a blackmailer. A Chinese-American screen legend, Wong had left Hollywood for Europe in 1928 citing a frustration with the supporting, stereotypical roles that were offered to her. In Germany, Wong became a superstar and found an abundance of starring roles that allowed her to branch out of the Butterfly/Dragon Lady roles that marked her American films. This is the second of five films Wong made with director Richard Eichberg.
