GERMAN FILM INSTITUTE <br>The Cinema of Crisis: German Film 1928-1936

Directed and written by Willy Zielke.

An experimental industry film, Das Stahtier was commissioned for the 100th anniversary of the German railways. It combines staged scenes depicting individual stages of technological development with documentary scenes of everyday life on the railways. Against the wishes of the Ministry of Transportation, the film was formally inventive, did not contain any explicit Nazi iconography, and represented the workers in a way that did not explicitly reflect Nazi ideals. As such, the film was banned by the censors.
