Get out the vote: UM EEB undergrad NatGeo grant finalist
Let’s rally the power of the Maize and Blue to help make a student’s dream come true.
Vote for Charlie Engelman’s video on National Geographic’s Expedition Granted website. Engelman, a University of Michigan senior, was selected as one of 10 finalists from among more than 700 entries. A grand-prize winner, selected by popular vote, receives a $50,000 grant to launch the proposed project.
Engelman’s plans are to make 20 to 30 short and fun science videos to engage the new generation of students. He will use the funds to go on an expedition across the United States to interesting and unique forests to capture one-of-a-kind shots via tree-climbing and light aircraft. All the while, he and his sidekick sister, Kirby, will present science as cool and relatable from the canopy to the hidden treasures below.
"This is an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Engelman, who is majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology with a minor in museum studies. “My passion is educational science media and National Geographic has given me a chance to take this interest to a whole other level. I am so excited, but there is one more obstacle I need to get past. Please consider giving me a vote and spreading the word! This can change my life, but I need your help!"
