Bick awarded Center for the Education of Women grant
Cindy Bick received a Menakka and Essel Bailey Graduate Fellowship from the Center for the Education of Women to support her research in Honiara, Solomon Islands this summer.
The $6,500 grant will support Bick’s sampling trips to sites throughout the Solomon Islands that are home to type specimens, which are specimens that formed the basis of the original description of an organism.
In December 2012, Bick successfully sampled partulid snails from the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea on the islands of Manus, New Ireland and Bougainville. She will expand her sampling sites during her two planned trips this summer targeting known partulid type localities sites of Partula in the north and central Solomon Islands. Specifically, she'd like to sample the remote archipelago of the Shortland Islands, close to the Papua New Guinea border. The second sampling trip will target the southern islands in the remote Santa Cruz Group (400 kilometers southeast ofthe main Solomon Islands chain in Remote Oceania).
The Menakka and Essel Bailey Graduate Fellowship grants are for graduate students who are U.S. citizens pursuing research, field work, cultural experience, or other study relevant to their graduate degree, preferably in the areas of public health, health care, or environmental work in South or Southeast Asia (excluding China or Japan).
