An Honors project offers the opportunity for the student to gain valuable experience through independent and substantive work in an area of their interest. Such a level of academic writing is required in the majority of graduate programs and is valued by employers.
To be eligible for an Honors major in Translation, students should have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.4, and a 3.5 grade point average in courses counting toward the major. Students who elect an Honors degree will be required to complete COMPLIT 496 (honors thesis) in addition to COMPLIT 497 (Translation Capstone Seminar), usually during their final year of coursework.
This capstone may take the form of a translation, an internship, community engagement, a project conducted during study abroad, or other forms of experiential or service learning, in addition to a critical essay that introduces the work being translated, engages existing bibliography of the work, situates the translation within the field of translation studies, and analyzes the translation's methodology. Students will want to identify a significant problem or point of discussion within the field of translation studies that this project addresses and narrate for readers how the honors thesis contributes to the field. See the Honors Thesis Guidelines for more information.
