Dr. Corrales leads the Space Particulates In Complex Environments (SPICEs) research group to study astrophysical solids, from the interstellar medium to exoplanet atmospheres. To achieve this goal, she specializes in developing advanced observational techniques that extend the capabilities of currently operating space-based observatories into new scientific areas. For example, her latest work characterizes exoplanet atmospheres at ultra-violet wavelengths, which can shed light on the physical processes that govern planetary demographics and, some day, habitability. As a leader in the X-ray Imaging Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM, launching in 2023), she works on astromineralogy — understanding the mineral composition, size distribution, and location of interstellar dust grains — which yields insight on the chemical evolution of the Universe. Her wide research portfolio includes additional topics such as the high resolution X-ray spectrum of Sgr A*, transforming laboratory data into physical models, and high energy characterization of exoplanet host stars.
She works to develop inclusive research environments in a variety of forms. She founded the peer-mentoring network, WoCCode, which seeks to unite women of color and other members of minoritized groups interested in software to battle feelings of isolation and marginalization that are prevalent in institutional settings.
