Elyssa Fogleman's research and teaching areas primarily include medical sociology/sociology of health and illness, sociology of emotions, and sociology of the body and embodiment. Her research has explored the social construction of emotional deviance, specifically burnout and depression, using a mix of computational and qualitative methods to uncover patterns in the historical framing of these conditions.
