Professor Emeritus
About
Professor Emeritus John Knodel passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024.
I have conducted research on a wide range of topics in social demography, mostly in South-East Asia and particularly in Thailand but also in Cambodia and Vietnam. Earlier I also specialized in European historical demography. Much of my current research deals with issues related to aging. As of Fall 2006, I am involved in projects studying several topics: the impact of rural to urban migration of adult children on older age parents in rural Thailand, the well being of the older age population in Cambodia in the context of poverty and AIDS; and family change in Vietnam in relation to war, reunification and economic renovation. A major area of recent interest has been the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the older persons, particularly in Thailand and Cambodia. Research in recent years has also focused on intersections between aging and gender and aging and sexual behavior. I have a long record of collaborative international research and am currently working with several Asian and American scholars in my research. Much of my research utilizes both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
