About
Raul Gălan is a sociologist whose work lies at the intersection of comparative-historical, cultural, and political sociology. He is mainly interested in the study of macro-historical transformations of states and societies and the impact that international patterns of diffusion of ideas has upon episodes of state formation and re-formation. In his current project, he explores the role of geopolitics and of political imagination in the transformations of the social and professional characteristics of the Romanian political elites from the 19th century to present. His research has received support from the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.
Methodologically, Gălan seeks to become a mixed methods sociologist. He has been teaching courses that range from ethnographic field research to statistics and data analysis. In 2021, he has been awarded the Michigan Sociology Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award.
Before joining the department, Gălan received his bachelor's degree in Social Research and Public Policy from NYU Abu Dhabi (2017).
