About
Jiyeon (pronounced jee-yawn) Lee is a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Michigan. Broadly interested in the intersection of gender and the state, Jiyeon’s work has centered on how gendered ideals of citizenship shape access to rights and resources, particularly within fertility-declining pro-natalist states. Her research to date has engaged with scholarly conversations in political sociology, sociology of gender, welfare states, and migration.
Current projects include research that investigates the moral and political economy of motherhood, exploring how state–market dynamics shape parenting norms, influence women’s reproductive choices and caregiving practices, and structure their relationship with the labor market.
Prior to joining Michigan, she received academic training in sociology under the guidance of Dr. Jocelyn Viterna, Dr. Paul Chang, and Dr. Mary Waters, among others. She also brings professional experience as a data analyst in the consulting industry in Japan, before resuming her academic career.
