Paralegal & Freelance Contributor
About
What do you do as a Paralegal & Freelance Contributor?
I'm currently a paralegal for an immigration law firm. I originally worked in the firm's office as a Junior Paralegal, Senior Paralegal, and eventually, a Team Leader for a team of legal assistants. However, I currently work remotely for the firm. I specifically work on the part of the immigration process which focuses on the Green Card application.
In addition, I also work as a freelance writer. Mostly, I work as a Freelance Contributor for a Pennsylvania lifestyles magazine.
Why did you choose to major in Psychology and how has that affected your career thus far?
I chose to major in psychology because I'm genuinely interested in understanding how our minds work. I took an AP course in high school, and it just clicked. Majoring in psychology has not only helped me to land job opportunities, but I'd like to think that it has also helped prepare me as a person in the workplace and working with others (especially clients). Sometimes, understanding a little bit more about the way people work makes all the difference in the stressful moments.
What was your career path like?
I wasn't the kid who knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up, so even though I've graduated, I'm still exploring in my professional life. I did, however, know in undergrad that I was interested in law, and I felt that psych could be helpful to me in that respect. Since graduating, I've tried a few different jobs in search of the right fit for me, but I've found that finding out what doesn't work for you is sometimes just as valuable as finding out what does work.
What advice do you have both professionally and personally for students and recent alumni who are interested in pursuing a career similar to yours?
For students and recent alumni, I would say that it is important to look for opportunities to work hands-on in a field. Studying a subject may give a great foundation, but you never know what clicks for you until you really give it a try. Beyond that, I would say, always give it your all--hard work goes a long way.
What is the best career advice that you have received?
The best career advice I've ever received was probably from my dad. He achieved a lot in his career, but he reminds me that no one starts out as the boss-- you have to work to get there. He also emphasizes though that you should enjoy each step along the way, that we all move forward when it's the right time for us (and that time is different for everyone).
What has contributed most to your career success?
I think that so far I've been fortunate enough to get to where I am because I've tried my best to always give 100% to my work, and because, when I needed to, I learned to speak up for the things I wanted.
Why do you love Michigan?
I love Michigan, because Michigan is more than just a label. Although, it is a name to be proud of-- everyone knows Michigan, it stands out. Michigan provides students with the best opportunities at their fingertips. In the end, it's not about prestige or exclusivity, at Michigan, it's about the stimulating learning environment that extends to the community around it. Michigan really prepares its students to take on their goals.
