Business Owner, Military, Project Manager at U.S. Military
About
Why did you choose to major in Psychology and how has that affected your career thus far?
It helped me keep options open for possible further careers. Psychology is great for marketing/advertising as well as management of people, and opening doors for careers like counseling, human resources, etc.
What was your career path like?
Active Duty military as a Project Manager, and in the last few years I've built a thriving business on the side.
What advice do you have both professionally and personally for students and recent alumni who are interested in pursuing a career similar to yours?
I would recommend going Reserves from the start if you're considering military (very similar benefits and much more flexible), and get as many certifications as you can while in undergraduate studies. Utilize your career services center to see what's possible for you and intern in the summers to see what you do and don't like. I've been able to do some trial and error and find a great career that I love and that challenges me intellectually every day.
What is the best career advice that you have received?
I believe Harvey Dent once said "I make my own luck" and I think that's very applicable to many individuals. You must run the race to win the prize, so get out there and meet people, ask questions, and learn from them. If you value work/life balance like I do, please know you don't need to continually hustle to succeed in life. Work smarter- not harder!
What has contributed most to your career success?
Podcasts. Without a doubt. While I am on my way to/from work I listen to business/entrepreneurial podcasts for the most part and use that time to learn! It has allowed me to take calculated risks, streamline business processes, innovate, and more.
If I don't want to be military, can I still work for the government and get school paid for?
Yes! There are so many programs including the SMART Program, Palace Acquire, and more. You can bloom anywhere you're planted, but graduating without student debt will likely help you out big time.
