What’s your favorite thing to do in a typical day?
Travel to college campuses and interact with students. It’s the best when I meet a student who I can tell will be a great fit for the company, and it’s even better to be able to provide such ambitious, creative students with great opportunities.
What’s the least favorite thing you do in a typical day?
General paperwork and applicant entry.
How did you decide on this field? How did you get hired?
Honestly, I hadn't really considered Human Resources as a career until I applied to DISH. I had initially applied for a Marketing position with the company; however, DISH VP (and former UM Alum) Eric Wohl encouraged me to consider Human Resources. He felt that my experiences and skill set would be a solid fit for the department. I met the company at the Fall Career Expo, had an on-campus interview the next day, completed several assessments and was invited for three days of Executive Interviews at the company headquarters in Denver, CO. That visit solidified my excitement about living in Denver and working for a fast-paced, innovative company like DISH.
How does your Michigan experience help you in your job?
My Michigan experience has largely shaped the work that I do every day. For example, while I was on campus I directed an a cappella group, 58 Greene. In that role, I was responsible for marketing the group, recruiting new members, assisting in their on-boarding and helping them develop throughout their time in the group. These are the types of tasks that I perform on a much larger scale in my job with DISH. The experiences I had at Michigan helped me become more efficient and effective at my job.
What are possible next steps for your career? Is another degree required or recommended?
I’m not sure what the next steps for my career will be at this point, but I do know that my current position has lent me unbelievable experiences that will stay with me no matter where life takes me. Another degree isn’t necessarily required for my job; however, I’ve personally always aspired to get my MBA. I think getting that degree could help me grow personally and professionally, and in turn benefit the company that I work for.
What do you wish you had known as an undergraduate preparing for your career?
That it’s all about the big picture. Don’t worry so much about that one particular exam or grade, but rather how your experiences are shaping the person you are and the work you want to be doing. Don’t close yourself off to roles you don’t know much about—there are a lot of jobs out there that might be a great fit for you, you just might not know it yet!
