What was your first step after undergraduate graduation & how did it impact your career path?

My first step was actually with a social work job in Maine that did not work out. I was devastated because I really felt that I failed as I knew within the first few days that it wasn't the right fit for me and quit before a week was out and moved back home. I started interviewing for marketing jobs and ended up at a credit union. The mix of business with a strong social mission and the opportunity to lead and work with people was a great fit.

What are you doing today?

Today I am the Director of Innovation at the Filene Research Institute, a think tank for the credit union industry.

How do you use your psychology undergraduate experience in your work?

I have used it every day in leading, managing and working with people.

What inspired you to enter that field/job/profession? What excites you most about the future of your profession?

I stumbled into credit unions not knowing much about them, but it was an excellent fit for me and I've been in the industry my entire career.

It's a wonderful time to be a credit union. Consumers today are looking for alternatives to the "big banks" and credit unions are a great fit. I feel really good about the fact that we improve the financial lives of members every single day.

What advice do you have for students getting a degree in the UM Psychology Department or considering your profession?

I encourage you to follow your passion. You spend so much time working. If you don't love it, it is vastly more difficult. The degree you earn from the University will take you far and the work you do to get your career started will be invaluable. Good luck!

What was your favorite experience while studying in the UM Psychology Department?

I loved my classes. I really liked the work that I did helping with research. I felt challenged and engaged and learned so much.
