Chief Mission Officer IMERMAN ANGELS, 1-on-1 Cancer Support
About
What was your first step after undergraduate graduation & how did it impact your career path?
My first job was a financial consultant, and although it helped in dealing with people and understanding people, it most importantly taught me that the mind could do more than just sales. I want to BUILD something with people, and helping people, and creating IMPACT in society.
What are you doing today?
I work for Imerman Angels today, making sure NO ONE faces cancer alone. We find a person figthing cancer, then hook them up with a survivor who beat the same thing! It's classic psych - EMPATHY helps people, connecting with others who understand HELPS PEOPLE. Our niche is 1-on-1, and they use skype, phone, and email to converse. The effect is AWESOME. People need it.
How do you use your psychology undergraduate experience in your work?
We use it EVERYDAY. Survivors support the mind of those in the fight today. We share strategies to keep the mind strong through the fight. We help them keep hope in the fight. Help them believe they can do it! Just as we DID it.
What inspired you to enter that field/job/profession? What excites you most about the future of your profession?
After my cancer fight at 26 and 28 years old, I had a vision how to help people. I pulled the trigger in 2006 to go full-time and build this service for anyone and everyone fighting cancer alone! Let's get survivors in the game to FIRE THEM UP to beat it!!!
We have the ability to help millions and millions across the globe! EVERY family touched by cancer can benefit. And we won't stop as long as cancer is around! We LOVE seeing attitudes shift from despair to BELIEF, to negative mood to positive, to eventually becoming confident they will beat it and LIVE!!!!!
What advice do you have for students getting a degree in the UM Psychology Department or considering your profession?
My advice is FOLLOW YOUR DREAM and listen to your heart and passion. Do WHAT you really beleive in. Find a way to do it. There is always a way. And use your mind to mkae the world a better place. There is a way, always, to make a living and also make the world a better place!!!
What was your favorite experience while studying in the UM Psychology Department?
My favorite part of UM psych was the way the professors challenged my mind to understand the HUMAN MIND, and the nature of the mind. It made me think about the human mind, outside the box. LOVED the experience. And i use it!
